Sustainability at Shebara: Designed in Harmony with Nature
Set within the pristine waters of the Al Wajh Lagoon, Shebara has been thoughtfully conceived with deep respect for its extraordinary natural surroundings. Every aspect of the resort's design and operation reflects a dedication to preserving this exceptional destination while delivering a world-class hospitality experience.
Sustainable Design & Innovation: LEED Platinum Certified Assets
Selected assets on Shebara's main island have been designed to achieve LEED Platinum Certification, the highest internationally recognized standard for sustainable building design and performance. This certification reflects a focus on energy efficiency, responsible resource management, and environmentally conscious construction.
Offshore Construction Approach
To help protect the fragile marine ecosystem of the Al Wajh Lagoon, Shebara's overwater villas were fully constructed, fitted out, and commissioned off-site before being transported and carefully installed in their final locations. This innovative approach significantly reduced the need for extensive marine construction within the lagoon.
Reflective, Low-Impact Architecture
Designed by Killa Design, Shebara's iconic stainless-steel orb villas mirror the ever-changing colors of the sea and sky, allowing the structures to blend seamlessly into the horizon while minimizing their visual impact on the surrounding landscape.
Off-Grid Infrastructure
Designed to operate independently from the national grid, Shebara is supported by an integrated infrastructure that includes a dedicated 110,000-square-metre centralised solar farm, on-site desalination facilities, advanced reverse osmosis water treatment, and integrated waste management systems. Renewable solar energy generated on-site powers most of the resort's operations.
Energy & Water Stewardship
Responsible resource management is embedded throughout Shebara's daily operations. Careful monitoring and efficient management of energy and water resources support the resort's long-term sustainability goals, while guests are invited to participate in optional towel and linen reuse programmes, helping conserve natural resources during their stay.
Responsible Operations
Thoughtful operational practices help minimize environmental impact while enhancing the guest experience. Waste is segregated through dedicated recycling streams to maximize resource recovery, while digital guest communications reduce paper consumption throughout the resort. Single-use plastics have also been eliminated from all guest-facing areas as part of Shebara's ongoing efforts to reduce unnecessary waste.
Mindful Gastronomy
Shebara celebrates the rich flavors of Saudi Arabia while supporting regional producers wherever possible. Approximately 35% of the resort's fruit and vegetable supply is sourced from neighboring farms and regional producers, bringing seasonal herbs, vegetables, dates, citrus fruits, figs, mangoes, olives, and other local harvests to the table. By sourcing locally whenever possible, our culinary team supports regional agriculture while celebrating the diversity and seasonality of the Kingdom's produce.
Protecting Biodiversity
The surrounding waters and islands are among the Red Sea's most remarkable ecosystems, and their protection remains central to Shebara's philosophy.
Low-Impact Exploration
Guests are encouraged to experience the destination through non-motorized water activities, while transportation throughout the resort is provided exclusively by electric buggies and bicycles, offering a quieter and more sustainable way to explore the island.
Wildlife Protection
Sea turtle nesting sites within the resort's surroundings are identified and protected, supporting ongoing efforts to preserve native wildlife and sensitive coastal habitats.
